Wordless Woodpecker

Nuttall's WoodpeckerA male Nuttall’s Woodpecker (Picoides nuttallii) on oak.

I didn’t really feel like I had anything to say today… but sometimes I think it’s OK to just be silent and share something beautiful…

You’re welcome, Chris! Not only attractive, but a very entertaining bird to watch as well. 🙂 I would be shocked if you couldn’t find one among the oaks at El Dorado, or even on the mesa at Bolsa Chica. They can be a bit difficult to spot, but their calls are very distinctive and once you learn them it’s much easier to figure out where they are. Check out the calls (especially the first one) on this page: http://www.xeno-canto.org/america/XCspeciesprofiles.php?species_nr2=1643.00&pagenumber=&order=taxonomy&view=3
