Waiting There For Me

gold and rose sky

Gold and rose,
the colour of the dream I had,
Not too long ago,
Misty blue and lilac too,
Never to grow old.

Jimi Hendrix, “One Rainy Wish”

As I leisurely browsed through sky images yesterday, I stopped to reminisce on my photos from January 27th of last year. A short walk behind our cabin and up the fire road (a plowed service road meant for fire and other emergency vehicles) brings me to a great west-facing overlook spot. This is where I shoot a great majority of the skies in my archives. Some days (like this one) it’s honestly hard for me to comprehend the beauty I’m seeing…

The view to the east was equally spectacular… but in a much more subtle way. The sky reflected back the colors of the sunset in an amazing pastel gradation suspended above the hills…

I love the pink morning skies of winter and the fiery sunsets. Now I’m missing winter in a big way 🙁 I love Jimi Hendrix, have you been to the Rock and Roll museum in Seattle? One thing that I loved was looking at Jimi’s writing scrawled on bits of paper, it was so touching , real and intimate. Have a good weekend Harsi, xo

Yeah… Ro, I’m already missing winter too. 🙁 In looking through all my sky photos, I was struck by how many of the most gorgeous shoots were from days in January. (Take heart though… I did see that as early as September, there are some nice sunsets starting to show up!) I love Hendrix too. No, I’ve never been to the Rock & Roll museum… I’ll be sure to make a visit when we make it back up there. Sounds like they’ve got some cool stuff. I smile every time I imagine you working hard out there in your studio to get ready for your show… looking forward to seeing you and Eric soon!

Beautiful crimson skies, these are some really amazing photos Harsi. On another note, gotta love Jimi Hendrix, and your mention of Regina Spektor in a previous post now has me convinced that you’ve got pretty good taste in music! Right on 🙂

Thanks, Chris! I’m pleased you liked these pics. Holy crap! You like Regina?!! Oh, man, we definitely do need to talk music. Expect an e-mail from me soon on the subject. 🙂 In addition to wildlife and photography, music has a top spot in my short list of important things in life.

What gorgeous shots you’ve got here, Harsi! I’m always in such awe of the variety of colors and shades that come out in the sky. Those oranges contrasted with the deep purple of the clouds in the first few are stunning. And the view to the east over the hills contains SO many subtle shades of blue/gray/purple. Wonderful. [When the sun is setting to the West out our window, we get some intense deep blues and oranges, along with some sparkling off the water, but only in the Summer. I’ll try to get some shots to share sometime.] Oh, and fantastic words to accompany. What a lyric (and melody). Certainly one of my favorites of Hendrix. Well chosen. 🙂 B

Hey, B! Hope you’re having a relaxing holiday weekend! Thanks for the kind words on my photos. Plan on seeing lots more sky pics as this blog continues… Sky images — especially those made somewhat abstract by the removal of land, trees, etc. — are one of my absolute favorite things to shoot. I found myself thinking quite a bit about your comment that you get some nice color in your skies, but only in the Summer. As I was mentioning to Ro, this is exactly the opposite here. Just to be certain I wasn’t imagining things, I went back through all my images for the last few years… other than an occasional pale wash of pink or orange across the sky, the months from April to August are pretty devoid of color. Then, you hit September and BOOM, amazing sunsets again. That gorgeous pinkish/red sky that you liked so much in my post “Be Here Now” was taken on March 30th… then, in the weeks following that… NOTHING! Weird, eh?! I was surprised (and pleased!) that some of my other friends were into Hendrix and appreciated the quote… but, I was certain when I chose it that you would approve. I remember how much we both dug “Axis” back in the day. 🙂
