In Celebration of the Autumnal Equinox

Mourning Dove feather
Fall Song

Another year gone, leaving everywhere
its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves,

the uneaten fruits crumbling damply
in the shadows, unmattering back

from the particular island
of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere

except underfoot, moldering
in that black subterranean castle

of unobservable mysteries – roots and sealed seeds
and the wanderings of water. This

I try to remember when time’s measure
painfully chafes, for instance when autumn

flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing
to stay – how everything lives, shifting

from one bright vision to another, forever
in these momentary pastures.

Mary Oliver

Thank you, Mary, for the gift of your poetry… for having the words and the insight to write of things that seem fresh yet ancient, personal yet universal.

I find myself curious and eager to see what this new season has in store. Wishing a wonderful day to all of you reading this!

(For those that are interested, the lovely image is a wing feather from a Mourning Dove.)

indeed, thank you Mary.. and thank you also to Harsi, for sharing her wonderful photos and sightings. Things are totally chaotic here, but hope you are well and hope to catch up soon! xo (I keep getting ‘sorry your comment appears to be spam’ messages- I’m not a bot.. honest!)

Good morning, Cindy! (Well, actually it’s already afternoon for you.) I know how important Mary Oliver is to you too… Oh, that reminds me… my friend Ro (who also adores Ms. Oliver) sent me links to this interview and video clip and I wondered if you had seen them? http://www.oprah.com/entertainment/Maria-Shriver-Interviews-Poet-Mary-Oliver/ http://www.oprah.com/spirit/Maria-Shriver-Interview-Poet-Mary-Oliver-O-Magazine-Poetry-Issue Such a joy to see and hear this amazing woman that has meant so much to me! Thank you for stopping by to say such kind things about my blog and photos, especially in the midst of your own CHAOS, which I know can be overwhelming and draining. I would say that I am doing as well as can be expected. I am staying positive, finding lots of moments of joy here and there, and getting outside for short little bursts whenever I can. I keep attempting to remind myself that I simply cannot control much (if any!) of what happens on a day-to-day basis. The only thing that I can do is work on the ways in which I choose to react to whatever comes. Aaaah… but, I know this is wisdom that you have already discovered for yourself. Hoping that you are finding your own moments of joy and that Garry is steadily healing from his recent injury. xoxo P.S. Sorry the system has been blocking you! Not sure why that would be… I’ll talk to my technical support (aka, Ezra) and try to figure out what’s up.

Hi Joy. Sorry for taking so long to approve the posting of your lovely comment. I almost missed seeing it! (My site has been inactive for quite awhile and it’s mostly just SPAM messages these days.) Thank you for the compliments on my photography. I too am quite fond of this feather. 🙂
